Cowgirl Clue - Fairy Tales - Rodeo Star
Today's quick review is about a song, or should I say an album, I really enjoyed in 2023.
I actually don't know much about Cowgirl Clue. To me, she's this mysterious figure. An odd texan girl mixing southern and country motifs with hyperpop. And she makes it work somehow! As I dived deeper into her earlier works, I noticed her tendancies for underlining simple and unchallenging pop melodies with jarring , unexpected, electronic and surrealist productions. It creates a bizarre and sometimes off putting contrast that I think makes her songs really charming. This creates an overly glamourous and dreamlike atmosphere in a grounded, muddy and sober environment. A duality captured to a T by the album, whether it be by its productions, its name, Rodeo Star, or even with the cover.
This dichotomy is present in her earlier work such as "Cherry Jubilee", a playful but distorded single released in 2017. It is quite raw and experimental but already highlights her love for odd sounds and samples.
"Fairy Tales" is definitely the dreamest cut off the album whereas "Picket Fence" or even "Trailbaze☆" 's production are way more electronic and hedonistic in nature. I think these two perfectly illustrate this "2000's pop star forced to live in a ranch" narrative Cowgirl Clue is all about in my opinion. I have yet to listen to her 2025 album, Total Freedom, but it seems to follow in Rodeo Star's footsteps. Can't wait to hear what Cowgirl Clue has in stores for us....

MIKE - Hunger - MAY GOD BLESS YOUR HUSTLE
So today's review is about a song I hold dearly to my heart. MIKE is an artist I've been listening every single day since 2024 and it is for a reason. His rapping is often labelled as "abstract rap". A term used to describe rap songs with stream of consciousness like lyrics , painting feelings, a peculiar scene or simply a pondering state of mind .Hence the short length of most songs labelled as such, it plays and ends as quickly as a thought. It is quite melancholic and introspective in nature and I think Hunger is representative of this quality.
It's so mundane and slice of life-ish, in a foggy way. His delivery is laid back, detached even, like seeing daily life from above. This stream of consciousness aspect breaks down the concept time : past, present and future is discussed and lived all at once, like experiencing your own life in a way you'd only do if you were out of your body, it's almost supernatural. A state of being i can't put into words really.
Trials and tribulations being spoken of so casually because at the end of day, it's just mundane life and it goes on. It found me at the right time, I've always been the "is it what it is" , "fuck it we ball' type of person and it kept me alive throughout anything. I feel like this song perfectly encapsulate my constant state of mind, kinda detached, half present and going on because what else can you do really? Going through the motions, letting things roll off your back, noticing thoughts and letting them go as they came. It is quite passive, i can't deny that, but it's freeing in a way. There's something comforting in knowing that "Tutto passa"...

Esthero - Heavent Sent - Breath From Another
My history with Esthero is pretty recent. Late 2025, I found myself falling into a rabit hole about 90's Trip Hop and its siblings genres. A lot of Portishead, Tricky and Massive Attack. Then I stumbled upon Esthero. "Heaven Sent" is the first track I've heard from her and it immediately pulled me in . The instrumental switching from a poppy Trip Hop inspired sound into a typical 90's rock-orchestra-fusion chorus was not something I expected. Her conventional "poppy" melody is off sent by her line delivery in the best way possible. It's coherent without being safe. It's definitely a product of its time, it is not barrier breaking by any means but it executes wonderfully what made this niche of 90s music great. I can't wait to dive deeper into Breath From Another and hear its more traditional trip hop cuts.
"Dragon's Fly" is the second track from her discography that stayed with me. Off her 2005 album "Wikked Lil' Grrrls". It is airy, etheral and sensual. The production is simplistic, so are her vocals, however it creates this beautiful sound, you can't help but close your eyes and just let go. A stark difference from Heaven Sent, which was commanding in it production.
Esthero - Dragon's Fly - Wikked Lil' Grrrls
I fully enjoy both facets of her artistic identity, although I haven't combed throught most of her projects, so this is just a review sharing my first experiences with her music, I might write a follow up after diving deeper into her discography...

FKA twigs- Ultraviolet - EP2
I've always been a fan of Twigs. I started listening to her in 2019 when MAGDALENE dropped. I was obssessed with "Holy Terrain" featuring Future. She's just so good at weaving interesting and etheral melodies even on more conventional productions . In 2021, I religiously listened to "Caprisuns", it was pop album with a dancehall pop fusion and yet still Twings. With tracks such as "ride the dragon", "pamplemousse" or "honda", she cemented her place as an artist i regulary go back to. I unfortunately was late to the "EUSEXUA" party, and bite into it around early 2026. While I like lots of songs off the main installation ( Eusexua, Perfect Stranger or even Childlike Things even if i was skepitcal seeing the featured "artist" ), I've comed around Afterglow way more. "Wild and Alone" featuring PinkPantheress has been on rotation since January, it's melody is just so simple and good urgh.
So we come to today's review. Lately, I've dived into her earlier works such as LP1 and EP2 mainly. I've been obssessed her earlier sound, while this etheral quality of her production has been a stample of her work, especially with EUSEXUA, it's just so pure and enchantic in her earlier projects. "Ultraviolet" is a beautiful example of this. The production is atmospheric, angelic and still maintening this electronic edge ( thank you ARCA ) and her voice lays gently on the beat. It's so pleasant on the ear and soul, you can't help but looping it over and over.
Same can be said for "Give up" of LP1, which pushed me to dive into her earlier projects in the first place. It holds the same qualities as "Ultraviolet", the production way more present and intricate but keeping this otherwordly sensibility. Her gentle voice and unexpected melodies elevate these spacey productions.
FKA twigs- Give up - LP1
I have to conclude by expressing how amazed I am by how coherent her sound is throughtout her discography from 2012 to now. Staying this artistically consistent and innovative is remarkable. FKA Twigs has nothing left to prove, I'm just eager to see where she leads us next.
